Uncertainty Caused By Crisis: Lack of Identity in the Face of Statehood
Ellen Sizer
About the Project
The conditions of Puerto Rico and its citizenry are dire. The issues surrounding water contamination, dependence on oil for electricity, and tax imperialism over the last hundred years are major examples of the crippling conditions that have left the state heavily indebted, facing an environmental crisis, and vulnerable to a catastrophe like that of Hurricane Maria. Cities like San Juan help to serve up a microcosm view of how these issues are plaguing the citizenry, city, and state. All of these issues could be placated by granting Puerto Rico statehood, therefore, allowing access to adequate funding, more political oversight, and a justified system of check and balances with political voice and identity.
