Governmental + NGO Response | Lessons for Puerto Rico
This project, entitled Case Studies in Disaster Relief Management, investigates three specific disasters and the subsequent local, government, and non-governmental organization (NGO) responses. The goal of our project is to provide Puerto Rico with some lessons in mitigating the horrible natural disasters that are becoming more and more prevalent as climate change persists. First, you will see and read accounts from Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Second, we discuss the response and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana. Third, we take you to the Philippines, where 2009’s Typhoon Ketsana rocked the country and its informal settlements to its core. Finally, we look at the 2010 Haitian earthquake, which altered the mission and scope of NGOs everywhere. Each of these disasters provided a unique response and, thus, unique lessons. We hope Puerto Rico heeds these lessons preceding and following future natural disasters.
