Eyes Up, Slow Down: Improving Pedestrian Safety in the 2030 District

Between 2017 and 2021,  there were over 400 traffic accidents involving pedestrians in the Uptown 2030 District surrounding the University of Cincinnati.  48% of these accidents resulted in the injury or fatality of a pedestrian. Available traffic crash data, existing roadway layouts, and perception levels of safety can be used to identify the most dangerous sections of road. Operating in tandem with the City of Cincinnati’s “Vision Zero” strategy, this study pinpoints target areas for road improvements to reduce pedestrian injuries and deaths. The time to act is now to ensure the Uptown area is safe for our most vulnerable road users.  The implementation of design strategies proven to slow vehicles down and make drivers more alert will increase pedestrian safety in the 2030 District.
